Police

The mobile police station no longer visits the village because of 'insufficient demand'. However it can be found at Birchanger Green Service Station on Thursdays from 1000 - 1100, except for the following dates when the times are 1115 - 1200: 3rd August, 31st August, 28th September, 26th October, 23rd november, 21st December. The dates for 2007 are 18th January, 15th February, 15th March. To contact the mobile police unit call 07989 335719.

It has not been easy contacting the police in this area. The local police station, at Stansted, is only open a few hours a week. At other times the phones (01279 812211) are diverted to Braintree or even Chelmsford. There is also an answering machine at Stansted on 01279 647680 which is checked daily, but you are unlikely to receive a reply unless you specifically ask for one.

There is now a neighbourhood policing team for this area who can be contacted on 07801 461666.

The usual advice applies - if you need the police quickly call 999.

Refuse and Recycling

Uttlesford District council has now adopted a three-bin system as part of an effort to increase recycling levels in the District. Unless the Council has granted an exemption, each household has three wheelie bins. They are used as follows.

The small brown bin is for 'wet recycling', or kitchen waste. This includes all sorts of kitchen scraps, including chicken carcases, eggshells and flower heads. It is acceptable, though messay, to place this rebbish directly into the bin. However it can be wrapped in newspaper or placed in a cardboard box such as a ceral packet. It can also be placed in biodegradable bin liners such as those on sale at the Social Club (£6.99 for a roll of 50). Be careful, however - not all recyclable liners on sale locally will be accepted. For instance there are reports that the biodegradable bags sold by Tesco are unacceptable, whereas those from Sainsbury's are OK.

The large black bin with the green lid is for 'dry recycling'. This includes clean plastics, newspapers, foil, food trays, magazines, cardboard and tin cans (aluminium and steel).

The other large bin, with the grey lid, is for non-recyclables.

Note that glass, metals and textiles should not be placed in ANY bin - they should be taken to a recycling point.

If you have any recycling enquiries call the UDC Recycling Hotline on 01799 510344 or email recycling@uttlesford.gov.uk.

The bins are emptied on Wednesdays. The wet recycling (brown) bin is emptied every week, while the other two are emptied alternately.

Collections are usually one day later (i.e. on Thursday) in weeks following a bank holiday.

A bottle bank and a newspaper recycling collection point are located in Birchwood at the junction of Wood Lane (close to the Social Club).

Rubbish Skip

Uttlesford has announced that it can no longer provide a free, unmanned, skip for villagers' rubbish. This is because of the increasing quantity of forbidden and dangerous material being deposited. Parish Councils will now have to pay for a manned skip.

Birchanger Parish Council has agreed that it will pay for the skip to visit the village from time to time.

The next skips will be on 3rd June, 18th August (half-day) and 18th November.

Telephones

Birchanger is on the 01279 dialling code, which also covers Stansted Airport, Bishop's Stortford and Harlow. ADSL broadband, including DSL Max, is available in the village from the Stansted exchange, but cable is not.

There is a public call box opposite 246 Birchanger Lane. Its number is 01279 812021. Private coin boxes can also be found in the Three Willows and the Social Club.
